Tips for Beginners

  • Yoga is a powerful system of using your muscles, tendons, joints and ligaments in a new way. When beginning Yoga you should be patient and allow yourself time to build the practice.
  • Never force, stress or strain any part of the body – remember, stay relaxed and breathe.
  • Yoga is not a sport – do not compete with yourself or anyone else.
  • Learn to work within your limits and listen to your body, it will tell you how far to go.
  • Practice Yoga on an empty stomach.
  • You will need light, loose, comfortable clothing and bare feet.
  • Trunks with various Yoga equipment
  • For your personal safety use a proper Yoga mat and have something warm to pull over the top when you lie back in relaxation – a little blanket is ideal.
  • During practice, if you feel tired, light headed or dizzy, take a rest and rejoin the practice when you feel ready.
  • Do not over exert yourself at any time and leave the class feeling refreshed, relaxed and rejuvenated!

Do I need to be fit and flexible to start Yoga?

Absolutely not. Yoga is suitable for all ages and all shapes and sizes. You learn to adapt the practice to suit your needs. Should you want to use Yoga to lose weight for example, this is perfectly possible. Attending class for more then once a week, (I recommend the Power form particularly) not only will you lose weight, you will change the shape of your body.
Like any new challenging activity, it can take time to understand the exercises and the benefit of each Asana – with persistent and patient practice it will come!
buddha with flower People often say to me ‘I can’t do Yoga because I’m inflexible.’ Yoga is exactly what such folks need – if you don’t have it already, Yoga will give it to you!
As I’m fond of saying, every body is different, so approach your practice with an open mind and you may well be amazed by the results.
Exercise ‘fads’ come and go – there’s a good reason people in their millions all over the world have been doing Yoga, in its various forms, for thousands of years.

What is Fusion Yoga?

This is a system developed by Sheila to incorporate a number of styles of Yoga emphasising safe Alignment, Pranayama and Core Strength all in one energising yet relaxing class.

What is Yin?

Yin Yoga utilises long-held floor poses to enhance the Qi (sometimes spelled Chi) or energy distribution throughout the bones and connective tissues that bind them.
This style of practice done slowly and safely, nourishes the natural range of motion of the joints, which allows for more ease in the seated poses.

What is Power Yoga?

Inspired by Astanga Vinyasa Yoga, Power Yoga is not only meditative but also physically challenging.
Central to the technique of Power Yoga is the sequencing of postures with interlinking transitional movements and a synchronized breathing pattern.
These create a flowing connection of Yoga postures that gives you a balanced practice and mental clarity.
If you enjoy a challenge this is for you!

What should I wear?

Loose comfortable clothing. Yoga is practised in bare feet.

Do I need any equipment?

All equipment is provided.

Can I eat before class?

Allow at least 2 hours for digestion after a main meal. If you really need to eat before class have something that is easy to digest.

Is there somewhere to change?

We have male and female changing rooms.

open quoteI approached Sheila for one to one lessons with the aim of learning enough Yoga to help me with free-diving, but with her knowledge and patience she has managed to introduce me to the full scope of what Yoga can offer. In the space of a few months I genuinely feel like a new person. Sheila is a flexible (pun intended), supportive and professional teacher who takes the time to understand individual strengths, weaknesses and aspirations.close quote
